Jackson's Excellent Adventure in the Andes

Jackson Hardin took a trip to Peru this summer.  Here is his report:

Around Midmorning we, my mother and I, left for the airport. Two flights totaling about 8 hours got us to Lima Peru, where we spent the night in an airport hotel. The next day we truly began the trip driving through Cusco city and to one of many acclimation hikes at about 10,000 feet above sea level. This one, like many others, followed a trail leading up, and through, a set of Incan ruins terraced into the side of a mountain. The trip included many hikes such as this, two through Machu Pichu itself. Towards the end of the trip we left for a final trek, which started at 9000 ft. ended at a little over 13,000, the camps being somewhere in-between. With these adventures and numerous stops to encounter local food and culture this trip was a wonderful way to see, and experience the Peruvian Andes.

Final Camp 2014 Report

Best Camp Ever!

Don't worry, this is just a drill!
After doing core and swimming at Lake Dennison State Park several campers volunteered to be subjects in a training drill for the lifeguards.  Below you can see Zoe after being "rescued" and pulled from the water on a backboard.

While the lifeguards drilled, our boys Will and and Lewis filled in as temporary guards.

Safety first (helmet, reflective vest), but when you go hard in rollerski intervals, sometimes you fall down. Ali took a hard crash and drew some blood.

Coach Dorcas Wonsavage educated the campers on the local flora.

One of the joys of summer camp is the many hours of unstructured time.  Although campers would like to have even more of it.  Nice to be "rich in sunny hours and summer days and spend them lavishly" as Thoreau said.

Thank you to coaches Dorcas, Kathy, Audrey, and Chris.  Thank you to all junior counselors.  Thank you to all parents for supporting this camp.  We made excellent progress on technique and fitness and had lots of fun.  Tentative dates for next year are July 6 to 11.  I will post agility test and skate interval time trial results very soon.

See you next year!

CSU Summer Camp Mid-week Repor

Tonight (our third night here at the Winchendon School) we worked on Visualization and Imagery.   Since the school is located in the center of an 18 hole golf course, we stretched out on a tee to visualize the perfect race.

After our visualization session we repaired to the cafeteria to enjoy some skits put together by the athletes.  They were extremely amusing with arch commentary on over-indulgent parents and the over-reaching of the Patriot Act.  Apparently, it is a clear sign of terrorist behavior if you steal Wood Skis.

It was good that we had plenty to keep busy this evening as the previous evening a few campers couldn't resist breaking curfew.  They ended up wiping down tables and doing dishes as penance today.

In the morning we did a long distance skate ski on the quiet roads of Rindge NH.  The weather was much drier after last night's thunderstorm.  In the afternoon, we did some quality classic technique work.

Yesterday we spent the morning hill-bounding on Mt. Watatic.  We stopped at the summit for a team photo.

Sunny day at Littleton

Ok, I accidentally posted these to the wrong blog, which is why you're seeing them a week late. Technology is difficult for old people...

Only photos from those on the Cisco loop today, since that's the loop I was on. Gorgeous day for rolling!

You really curse yourself for not having any money when you roll past a lemonade stand complete with a trumpeter! (He was pretty good).

Uh oh... Violet's been skiing behind Rosie and picked up the head tilt!

CSU cape CID camp

Day one greeted us with stellar weather but hot temperatures. So we decided to make full use of the beach. The ocean had built a sandbar 100 yards out but left a nice wide river for safe water fun activities. We had relays paddling boards, swimming and running. after a short break we did core in the ocean surf. Ah nice and cool when the waves come up. Then a fe clouds moved in and we claimed the parking lot for classic technique workouts which were followed by a short interval up the hill at the end. By 7 everyone was hungry and Sue and Dave had already prepared a wonderful pasta Dinner with Kale salad. Today started early with a quick out meal to energize. By 8! We were on our skis exploring the bik paths that wind through the dunes of the province lands. freshly paved - awesome! We master all the little hills up and down and then stopped at the visitor center. The ranger was very nice and showed us a movie on the geological history of the Cape, the whaling and the origin of the US coast guard. By 11 we were back hungry of course and after a lunch everyone is taking a break to evade the high heat of the day. we are also preparing for some rain but as you know CSU is a resilient crowd and I am sure a bit of weather will not impact further fun. So all is well here. I tried to post on the blog but it would not let me do it with pictures from my IPod.
